Susan Perabo " Who I Was Supposed To Be" Short Stories
Sarah Melton
Counting the Ways
This Story is very strange. In the beginning the first thing
that I notice is that miss spell New York and the spell kill wrong. They spell
it Newark and Keel. It kind of seems like the girl is glad that her mother
finally died. She didn’t have to worry about it so much now. The daughter
learns that she has inherited a good amount of money from her mother. She
doesn’t want to use it though to get a new house. She wants to use it to buy a
dress that the princess used to own. It’s kind of ironic how this story has a
main story to it and a side story. What I mean by that is that it is telling us
about this girl that dreams about being a princess and cares a lot about the
princess. It also tells the story about the princess dying in parts of it and
the dress she bought being worth a lot more money now.
This story is a successful story because it makes you feel
as if you are actually there and you are seeing and hearing everything that is
going on. Its descriptive but not too much so it makes it good. The details in
it are good and they are so good about how the girl acts when things happen
that you could really imagine a girl doing that. In some stories that’s hard to
imagine but in this one you can imagine it.
I don’t believe there are any parts of this story that
failed from what I can tell because it is so descriptive but at the same time
not to descriptive to where it makes you feel bored and not want to read it
anymore. The only place that it might have failed is actually the location of
the story because you aren’t really sure where they are at.
In the end of the story though you aren’t sure really who to
feel bad for because the husband just wanted to start a new family and move
into a house so that they could start that family. The wife on the other hand just
really wants to keep the dress and it’s a part of her. It is her connection to
the princess and her mother. The only annoying part of this book is when she
tried to just leave and not sell the dress. She apparently doesn’t what to
start a family so bad anymore. The husband at that point though I think
realizes that it’s not worth running after her anymore like he used to do.
Thick as Thieves
This
story was the worst of all the ones that I have read because it was boring and
there was nothing interesting about it really. It kind of surprises you that
the father is stealing from his own son instead of maybe asking for money. The
father though has apparently done it a bunch. Even though he says the mask is a
joke I believe that it really isn’t that he does steal from other people too.
This
story over all failed because I don’t understand what point they are trying to
make or anything like that. It is understood that the son might not like his
life as it is and he has been remarried a few times. It kind of makes it point
out that they are both basically lonely but I don’t feel like that is the real
point of this story.
The
only part of this story that might have actually succeeded was the part when
you don’t expect there to be the son’s wife’s jewelry in his dad’s suit case.
That was the surprise of the story. It threw a little curve ball there.
It’s
annoying to think that a father would actually do that to his own son. That is
just what makes this story terrible. It is very Ironic though that the son is
actually the one writing this book and not trying to make it about him but
about his father. In the beginning, all of it is pretty much about him and
throughout the story a lot of it is about him.
Explaining Death to a
Dog
This
story was a very interesting one. The title of it had me interested even before
I read it. It makes you think what kind of death are they trying to explain.
The death of someone who lived in the same house as the dog or another dog?
This one I liked a lot just because you wouldn’t really expect the husband a
wife to try and explain the death of the baby to the dog. It was interesting
that the mother was trying to do that and I think that is what made this book a
good one.
It
succeeded because it made you feel as if you were there in the story and trying
to explain where the baby went. You feel bad for the dog and for the parents
especially when the mom is struggling to explain it to the dog. She doesn’t
know how to explain it to the dog. It’s Ironic though that she is trying to teach
a dog. Her husband in the beginning of the story thought that it was
ridiculous.
It is
interesting that the husband doesn’t realize that something is wrong with the
dog until towards the end when he breaks and can’t really handle it. The wife
though realizes that they aren’t going to be able to make the dog make sense of
what happened not long after she uses a squirrel to try and teach the dog. It
is kind of weird how she tried to use the dead squirrel.
There
isn’t really any part of this story that failed because it was detailed good
and its overall very interesting.
The
only part of this book that is annoying is when the husband is getting
frustrated with the wife just because is trying to help the dog deal with it.
In a way, I think she herself is just trying to deal with it. Both of them are
dealing with the deal in different ways.
